A gourd and a human skull occupy the same position on screen while the image crossfades between them, carried through the vocabulary of a failing broadcast signal: interlacing, tracking dropout, chromatic fringing. The ninth-century Korean monk Wonhyo drank from a vessel in the dark and found at dawn that it had been a skull. The water had not changed. Here the pixels do not change either; what changes is the reading.
